in the P.S. 1 exhibition, "Special Projects (Spring 1979)"

In 1972, the artist Norman Hasselriis (1918-2006) left the New York corporate advertising world behind for a new beginning in the Catskills Mountains. In 1983 he moved to The Assemblage in the rural village of Oak Hill, where he lived and worked for the rest of his life, and spent his days creating a universe of roughhewn sculptures made from objects found in the junkyards, dumps, barns and flea markets he regularly frequented.
